Announcement: CCPS Gallery Presents - A Circus Life - Photos by Photojournalist Mark Solomon Oct. 1-31

Photojournalist Mark Solomon, who has taught courses at Pratt's
Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS) for more than 10
years, will present his work in an exhibition, titled "A Circus Life:
Working Hard for a Smile" from October 1-31, 2008 at the CCPS Gallery,
located on the 2nd Floor of the Pratt Manhattan Campus, 144 West 14th
Street.

The photos were taken some years ago, when Solomon joined Ringling
Brothers Barnum & Baily Circus during the summer to sell souvenirs.
Between sets, he photographed the circus performers as they prepared for
the show. He describes the shots as "time capsules" of these performers,
whose "dreams were the same as actors and performers all over the
world-to entertain, enthrall, and amuse." The images are traditional
black and white photographs that were taken without flash, using single
lens reflex cameras, f-stops, manual focus, and contact sheets, but were
then printed digitally.

Mark Solomon (www.dcmedina.com/gallerysolomon) apprenticed as a
photographer's assistant for many years before working as a
photojournalist for the San Francisco
Examiner. He is a graduate of Vassar College and a cinematography fellow at
the
American Film Institute. Solomon also is an IT professional and has
created numerous corporate websites.

This exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 AM-8
PM Monday through Friday and Saturday 10 AM-4 PM.

Announcement: NY Times Looking for Creative Living Spaces Designed by Students

Dear Students:

A writer from the Home Section of The New York Times is doing a story
about students who have managed to put together great looking living
spaces with very little money. The space can be anything from dorm rooms
and suites to apartments, the important thing is creativity and style --
and also having the sort of eye that enables you to see potential in a
sidewalk throwaway.

The reporter is especially interested in places that have been put
together from junk stores, thrift shops, yard sales, and finds from the
curb. She is also interested in low-cost design solutions; say making a
comfortable home for five people in a space designed for two.

If you are interested in potentially being featured in this article,
please send a brief description of your space (including where
furnishings are from and their costs) and no more than 3 JPG images to
aarono29@pratt.edu. Images will be used for reference only; if your space
is featured, The Times will send a photographer to shoot the space.

To be considered please send all images and information to the above
address by noon on Monday, September 8.

(WEATHER RELATED)

This September is proving to be a very active Tropical Storm and
Hurricane Season. Currently, Tropical Storm Hanna is traveling north from
the Cuba area and is expected to reach the New York area by Friday night
and Saturday. Depending on its development and strength; it can possibly
bring a degree of bad to severe weather to our area. Pratt Institute has
already began storm preparations around the campus and is recommending
that all students, faculty and staff monitor local weather stations and
reports to keep up-to-date with any information and advisories that may
be provided concerning the storm's path and impact.

Additionally, those who have signed up for emergency text messaging will
receive text message alerts of any severe weather watches, warnings and
campus closings. We ask that Willoughby Hall residents make sure their
balconies are empty to prevent a flying debris problem. Furthermore, keep
exterior windows and doors closed during the storm, and avoid being
outdoors during the storm as there may be flying debris.
