Announcement: Cooper-Hewitt Curator Cynthia Smith to Present the Lecture - Design for the Other 90% - Thursday, Nov. 15
(HAD) will present "Design for the Other 90%," a fall 2007 lecture by
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum curator Cynthia E. Smith on
Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in Room 230 of Main
Building on the Institute's Brooklyn Campus. The event is free and open
to the public.
"Design for the Other 90%" is an exhibition recently presented at
Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, May through
September 2007, that explores the growing trend among designers to
develop solutions that address basic needs for the vast majority of the
world's population not traditionally serviced by designers. Organized by
Smith, along with an eight-member advisory council, the exhibition was
divided into sections focusing on water, shelter, health and sanitation,
education, energy, and transportation.
Smith both curates and manages the exhibitions that travel at the
National Design Museum. Prior to joining Cooper-Hewitt, she completed a
master of public administration at Harvard University's Kennedy School of
Government, integrating her work experience with her advocacy and
activism on the issues of human rights and social justice. Trained as an
industrial designer, Smith has worked in a NYC architectural firm
planning and designing projects for cultural institutions, resulting in
numerous award-winning projects. A common thread in all of her work is
working collaboratively to bring a collective idea into an innovative
form.
The mission of HAD is to explore the field of art history and to offer
opportunities for professional and academic growth through excursions,
workshops, and professional lectures. "Design for the Other 90%" is HAD's
first lecture of the year, and marks the second year of the lecture
series. Past lecturers include David Cohen from the New York Studio
School and Charles T. Little of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
